Ke$ha Gives Stunning Tribute
All the talk before the Billboard Awards centered around Ke$ha and the question of if she would be allowed to perform. Her record label finally consented and the singer wowed the crowd with a Bob Dylan tribute. Ke$ha performed with Ben Folds, “It Ain’t Me, Babe”.
The star who’s often remembered for crazy songs and auto-tune, performed without any backdrop or effects keeping the focus on the tribute and her welcome singing skills. A standing ovation greeted Ke$ha at the end of her tribute marking the longest applause of the night.
Ke$ha definitely had a thing for suits at the Billboard Awards. Her red carpet look consisted of a purple vintage Gucci suit that had everyone talking.
On her Instagram, Ke$ha shared, “very lucky to be wearing a classic nudie suit on this carpet. this piece of vintage clothing is truly a piece of art ( like. museum piece ) and an homage to both Bob Dylan and Prince. Thank u so so much to the nudie suit crew for sharing this art and letting it adorn my body tonight. I'm very appreciative and grateful 🙏🏻🙏🏻”
Adele’s New Video Had Everyone in Awe
Choosing to forgo a crazy show, Adele wowed Billboard watchers by premiering a new music video. The video did not disappoint. With her renowned voice, emotional lyrics, and beautiful imagery, “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” was an instant hit.
Adele’s Send My Love video will likely be remembered for it’s trippy visuals that match the emotional disconnect of the song. The video was actually recorded in Adele’s hometown, London. Adele took home awards for Top Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, and Top Selling Song.
Following the Billboard Music Awards and Adele’s stunning new video debut, it was announced that the formidable singer is to sign a £90 Million contract with Sony, the largest deal ever for a British Musician.
Madonna + Stevie Wonder Surprise Tribute
Madonna opened her performance with a little “Let’s Go Crazy” and then dove right into “Nothing Compares 2 U”. Her purple suit and purple throne were clearly chosen in memory of Prince. In the background, Madonna was accompanied by a string quartet and a photo montage of Prince.
What really got the audience going was Stevie Wonder’s surprise arrival. He came out to help Madonna lead a singalong of “Purple Rain” while the audience lifted purple glow sticks commemorating the great singer.
Before the Billboard Music Awards, Prince fans started a petition asking for Billboard to find another singer to cover Prince. Billboard stood behind their position to choose Madonna siting the singer’s long history with Prince.
Madonna took to Twitter after the awards to detail her excitement.
Celine Dion Solidifies Icon Status
Dion cemented her icon status with a mind-blowing tribute to Queen with “The Show Must Go On” and her Icon Award win.
Surprising even Dion herself, the famed singer’s son came out to present the award driving the star to tears. Dion thanked her fans, her team, her label, and lastly her recently-passed husband, René: “my beloved husband whom I know will continue to watch over me from up above.”
Knowing how to please a crowd, Dion ended by lifting her award in the air and exclaiming, “The show must go on!"
Rihanna Celebrates Her Best Live Performance Yet
Fans were raving that Rihanna’s performance on “Love on The Brain” was her best live performance yet. In addition, the chart-topping singer took home the Billboard-Chart Achievement Award.
While many listeners have previously complained that Rihanna couldn’t sing live, they were all proved wrong with the singer’s incredible solo.
Vintage proved to be a trend at the Billboard Awards. Rihanna wore an olive green Thierry Mugler coat dress which received mixed reviews. She paired the dress with Manolo Blahnik crystal mules for a look that stood out. Of course her green boa tattoo also had all eyes on the singer.
Notably missing from the 2016 Billboard Music Awards was Taylor Swift. Although the singer was up for eight awards, she did not attend the event which might have been due to Calvin Harris’ recent car accident.
Other honorable mentions for the Billboard Awards’ major moments: Britney Spears’ top hit medley, Joe Jonas and DNCE’s performance of “Cake By the Ocean”, Shawn Mendes’ “Stitches” performance, The Bachelorette’s JoJo Fletcher made her debut, Mark Cuban took the stage to add fire to presidential campaign rumors, and PINK flew around in flames.
