The Helix Cuff has been announced as a winner of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016, the international distinction for high design quality. We’re so grateful for this recognition and honored to be named a leader in product design.
The Red Dot jury includes 41 members, consisting of independent designers, design professors, specialists, and journalists, who assessed the record number of 5,214 products from 57 nations. We are so thrilled to be chosen as a winner.
The independent expert panel assesses each entry strictly and fairly, live and on site, according to criteria such as degree of innovation, formal quality, functionality and ecological compatibility. Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and president of the Red Dot Award: “With their performances, the Red Dot winners not only demonstrated an extraordinary design quality, but they also showed that design is an integral part of innovative product solutions.”
Among this year’s jury members, you might recognize Datuk’ Prof. Jimmy Choo of couture shoe fame. In 1983, Choo founded his own couture label with customers including the late Diana, Princess of Wales. In 1996, Choo launched his ready-to-wear line with Tom Yeardye. Choo sold his share in the business in November 2001 to Equinox Luxury Holdings Ltd, charging them with the ongoing use of the label on the luxury goods market, while he continued to run his couture line.
Choo now spends his time promoting design education. He is an ambassador for footwear education at the London College of Fashion, a spokesperson for the British Council in their promotion of British Education to foreign students and also spends time working with the non-profit program, Teach For Malaysia.
Another distinguished member of the 2016 Red Dot Award jury is Chris Bangle, the former Chief of Design at the BMW Group. After pushing car design language to its limits for 28 years, he announced his departure from BMW in 2009, but not from car design. He is pursuing his own design-related endeavors from his studio in Italy, focusing on new ideas and cutting-edge innovation.
From the very beginning of the Helix Cuff, we knew that design would be a major focus. Creating a wearable that people want to wear every day, something that’s both comfortable and functional was a great design challenge.
Our designer meticulously pack immense technological power into a small space while also making the wearable attractive and sleek. These constraints gave us the opportunity to be very creative and invent the Helix Cuff’s iconic loop shape. Merging headphones and wearables into one product is something that we knew would solve a universal problem, so we didn’t let anything stop us as we worked tirelessly to create the Helix Cuff, fashion-forward wearable headphones.
Our purpose at Ashley Chloe is to seamlessly combine performance with style and convenience. The Helix Cuff is just the first manifestation of this purpose. We are constantly working on new solutions and new innovations that will further improve people’s lives.
History of the Red Dot Award
The Red Dot Award’s product design competition started in 1954! Can you believe it? The Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, one of the oldest and reputable design institutions in the world started the competition and create The Red Dot which is actually an internationally recognized quality seal. Today, the Red Dot is one of the world’s largest design competitions.
The competition appraises the best products of the year. Manufacturers and designers from all over the world participate sharing originals of their latest innovations in the hope of being awarded the sought-after distinction “Red Dot”.
What does good design mean to Red Dot? A pleasing appearance is not enough. Good design improves our lives making our working environment safer or spending our free time in a more comfortable way. Design also always means functionality, ergonomics, easy handling and ecological compatibility. According to the purpose of an item, some characteristics are given more priority, others less.
There are 31 categories within the Red Dot Award ranging from lighting and lamps to fashion, lifestyle, and accessories. All members of the Red Dot jury commit to a “code of honor” which basically avoids bias from jury members involved in a particular product.
Red Dot Award winners are presented in the Red Dot Design Museum on the premises of the historical Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen. In 2013, the Red Dot Design Museum Taipei was opened. Every year, the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary design informs around 150,000 visitors about current trends and top achievements.
The Red Dot Design Museum also began in 1954. Today it houses over 2,000 innovative exhibits of award-winning design. Since 29 April 1997, all award-winning products are exhibited at the Red Dot Design Museum Essen on the grounds of the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex. The facility, which was abandoned in 1986, was declared a World Cultural heritage by the UNESCO on 14 December 2001 – and with it the former boiler house which houses the Red Dot Design Museum today.
Previous Red Dot Award Winners
In the 62 years the Red Dot Award has been running, there have been numerous well-known winners and we’re happy to say that the Helix Cuff now ranks among them. In 2015, Red Dot named LG the brand of the year. The title of Brand of the Year was bestowed on LG for its 13 wins in the Red Dot Award: Communication Design category over the course of the year. LG’s winning entries embody the company’s human-centric user experience (UX) design philosophy with a simpler and more intuitive interface to accommodate individual users.
Sony won 15 Red Dot Awards in 2015. Sony was first recognized for its innovative designs in 2000 when they received their first Red Dot Award. Thanks to their continued drive and dedication to deliver stylish and functional design, Sony is still going strong.
The BMW Group won four Red Dot Awards in 2013. This included their BMW M6 Gran Coupe and the BMW F6 1 Series for their innovative, yet traditional design. The first Red Dot award was given for the design of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe that "embodies an exceptional harmony of athletic and aesthetic appeal" according to BMW officials.
Apple has won as many as five Red Dot awards in one year. The smartphone giant even has its own exhibition in the Red Dot Design Museum. Innovative company strategy, state-of-the-art technology and minimalist design language – Apple conveys the lifestyle of a whole generation. Innovation and design are characteristic elements of Apple’s company culture. Unsurprisingly, the Apple Watch won a Red Dot Award last year.
