First debuting in 2013, the Cult Gaia “it-bag” didn’t shoot to stardom until 2016, when it began to gain traction in the feeds of Instagram fashion bloggers and casual scrollers alike.  There’s no denying that this bag is a total show-stopper (despite being relatively impractical). The bag’s geometric shape is surprisingly refreshing and unique compared to other luxury brands who stick to tried-and-true leather or suede.  This bag is only made with one material: bamboo. The mini version of this bag retails for a surprisingly affordable $128.00, the largest version just under $200. There’s no way even the most casual social media peruser wouldn’t recognize this beautiful bag.  So where does this bag come from, and why is it so popular?

The Cult Gaia brand was created in 2012 by 28-year-old Jasmin Larian, who was inspired to make items that would “live in the closet forever” and “make you look twice”.  It seems that Larian has achieved this vision and more, but it wasn’t without time and effort. According to an interview published in Allure, when the bag first went on sale, there wasn’t a single purchase for an entire 2 years.  It wasn’t until a boutique called Fivestory in New York City began selling the bags that women began to warm up to the idea of accessorizing with such an avante-garde piece.
